This course examines how substance use disorders affect family systems and the emotional, relational, and behavioral patterns that can emerge. Participants will explore the role of families in helping loved ones access treatment, intervention approaches, and common challenges during early recovery, including rebuilding trust, communication, enabling dynamics, and changing family roles. The course also explains how early family involvement can strengthen treatment engagement and recovery outcomes, while identifying practical strategies and resources to support families affected by addiction.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to enhance clinicians’ ability to recognize and address the impact of substance use disorders on family systems throughout the treatment and recovery process. Participants will strengthen their clinical skills in engaging families, supporting healthy communication and boundaries, and connecting families with appropriate resources to promote sustained recovery.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the impact of substance use disorders on family systems including common emotional, relational and behavioral patterns that develop when addiction is present.

  • Describe the role families play in helping a loved one access treatment, while exploring intervention approaches.

  • Identify at least three common challenges families experience during early recovery including trust rebuilding, communication breakdown, enabling dynamics and role shifts in the household.

  • Explain how early family involvement improves treatment engagement and recovery outcomes.

  • Identify and differentiate between practical strategies and resources that support families affected by addiction.

Rob Strauber, CIP, CAI-II, CFRS, CRS - I provide specialized intervention and complex family systems coaching for families facing addiction, serious mental illness, and emotional crisis—situations where delay, confusion, or missteps can carry real and lasting consequences. My work integrates ARISE (A Relational Intervention Sequence for Engagement) and CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training), two gold-standard, evidence-based models that help families engage resistant loved ones in care while restoring boundaries, safety, and stability. When families are exhausted, frightened, and unsure what to do next, I bring structure, clarity, and coordinated action. Through non-confrontational intervention, early-recovery support, and strategic family coaching, I stabilize volatile systems and align everyone around a path forward that protects both the person at risk and the people who love them.
