Vaping, the New Smoking? Treating Nicotine Dependence in Behavioral Health Settings

|

Information

Date & Time

Description

People with behavioral health and substance use disorders continue to use nicotine and tobacco products at higher rates than the general population. Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable disease and death for this population, yet treatment is limited in many behavioral healthcare settings. Additionally, the rapid rise in vaping has created new challenges for nicotine dependence assessment, treatment, and recovery. This presentation will discuss practical strategies for integrating evidence-based nicotine and tobacco use treatment into routine care. Topics include the burden of tobacco use, myths about quitting during recovery, evidence-based treatment approaches, strategies for implementing treatment, barriers and solutions, and Louisiana cessation resources.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the burden of nicotine and tobacco use, including cigarette smoking and vaping, among individuals with behavioral health and substance use disorders and explain their impact on health and recovery.

  • Apply evidence-based strategies to screen for nicotine use, assess nicotine dependence and readiness to quit, and provide individualized, stage-matched treatment using behavioral counseling and pharmacotherapy.

  • Implement system-, clinic-, and patient-level strategies to integrate evidence-based nicotine and tobacco treatment into routine behavioral health and substance use care.

  • Recall nicotine and tobacco use cessation resources in Louisiana to assist behavioral health and substance use organizations, health professionals, and their clients.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to enhance participants' knowledge, confidence, and clinical competence in assessing and treating nicotine dependence among individuals who smoke, vape, or use both products in behavioral health and substance use settings. Participants will strengthen their ability to implement evidence-based, patient-centered, and systems-level strategies that improve tobacco treatment integration, promote long-term recovery, and reduce tobacco-related disease.
