Participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least three ways family education and accommodation discussions can support ED treatment.

  • Describe at least two family or sibling factors that influence support, stress, or eating habits.

  • Apply two strategies for involving siblings or other family members more intentionally in treatment planning.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase behavioral health professionals’ knowledge and skills in engaging parents and siblings as partners in eating disorder treatment and recovery. Participants will learn how family education, accommodation reduction, family climate, culture, stressors, and environmental influences can affect recovery, sibling relationships, and eating behaviors.

Description

This presentation explores how parents and siblings can play a meaningful role in the healing and treatment of eating disorders. It highlights the value of family education, accommodation discussions, and interventions that include siblings more intentionally in the treatment process. The workshop also examines the family, cultural, and environmental factors that shape relationships and how support of the entire system's needs can improve family life satisfaction through the challenges of recovery. Overall, it offers a family-systems perspective on why broader family involvement can strengthen support and recovery.

Presenters

Mackenzie "Mack" Jantsch, MS, LMFT, graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Master's of Science specialization in Marital and Family Therapy. Mack worked at Youth Services of Tulsa for 5 years before joining the adolescent treatment team at Laureate's Eating Disorder Program. Mack is certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Currently, she is finishing up certification criteria for both EMDR and CEDS (Certified Eating Disorder Specialist). Recent presentations include how to engage adolescents in healthy social media use, improving body image in family systems and, utilizing siblings in eating disorder treatment. Mack has a passion for using family systems and trauma-informed care to help families navigate how to handle the stress and challenges of raising an adolescent in today's world.
