Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the competencies necessary for counselors to conduct parent consultation.

  • Describe at least three activities that increase counselor skills in working with parents.

  • Apply activities into their counselor education courses and/or supervision through example excerpts and objectives.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is for attendees to learn what competencies are necessary for conducting parent consultation. They will be taught three activities that increase counselor skills in working with parents, and they will learn how to teach these activities to their clinical supervisees.

Description

Parent consultation literature has been prolific in school counseling, yet sparse in general counseling literature. Child counselors cite working with guardians as the most challenging aspect of counseling children. Due to the many skills counseling students/supervisees need to demonstrate in counselor education programs, skills specific to working with parents are overlooked. In this presentation, the presenter will identify competencies for working with children and parents and facilitate experiential activities.

Target Audience
