Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize and describe three key elements in working with people in precontemplation

  • Describe the strategic use of three core strategies in MI – listening well, softening sustain talk, and listening for change talk

  • Identify key markers in client language about readiness to change

  • Apply learned skills to identify strategies for integrating Motivational Interviewing techniques into professional practice settings

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to recognize practitioner behaviors that can influence conversations towards being helpful or unhelpful. Through learning a few key elements from motivational interviewing, they will discover or rediscover how to identify and respond to indications of client readiness, observe how small changes in practice can enhance results, and utilize and refine communication skills to respond more effectively in the context of their work.

Description

This continuing education program examines clinical strategies for supporting individuals in the precontemplation stage of change using evidence-based Motivational Interviewing (MI) principles. Grounded in contemporary MI theory and research, the training focuses on aligning practitioner communication strategies with client readiness to change in order to reduce resistance and enhance engagement. Participants will be introduced to targeted MI concepts and corresponding clinical skills for facilitating productive conversations in early stages of change. Instructional methods include didactic presentation, modeling, guided discussion, and structured practice exercises designed to strengthen clinical competence in motivational interviewing applications.
