Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least three practical opportunities for counselors to use their professional voice and influence to advocate for clients, the counseling profession, and systemic change.

  • Explain how a bill or policy moves through the legislative process and identify specific points where counselors can engage and make their professional voices heard.

  • Examine how ethics, relationship building, and effective communication shape the way counselors advocate, when navigating disagreement or competing perspectives.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to empower counselors to view advocacy as an accessible part of being a counselor rather than an activity reserved for policy experts. Participants will develop the knowledge, ethical awareness, and practical strategies needed to confidently engage in advocacy and play the long game of creating change.

Description

Counselors are uniquely positioned to advocate for the counseling profession, yet many may feel uncertain about how to effectively engage in the legislative and policy process. This interactive workshop will support understanding of the legislative process and explore ethical and actionable ways counselors can engage in advocacy. Through practical examples and discussion, participants will leave with greater confidence and concrete strategies for becoming engaged, ethical, and effective counselor advocates.
