Description

Our first session will introduce the theory of Mentalization, which forms the foundation of Adaptive Mentalization-Based Integrative Treatment. We will explore the theoretical background of mentalization, examine the why, how, and who of mentalizing, and discuss practical and clinical examples. Additionally, we will consider how mentalization supports the development of epistemic trust and how this, in turn, can enhance our relationships not only with clients, but also with team members and supervisees.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Attendees will learn the key theories and basic definition of mentalization.

  • Attendees will gain understanding of how mentalization builds epistemic trust with clients and colleagues.

  • Attendees will rehearse mentalization by participating in a small group activity.

Presenters

Shelly Simpson, LCSW
Shelly serves as the Director of AMBIT (Adaptive Mentalization Based Integrative Treatment) at Ellenhorn and was previously the Clinical Director of Ellenhorn Los Angeles. She oversees, supervises, and actively participates in AMBIT teams. Shelly has also contributed to the field, having authored a chapter on Ellenhorn's implementation of AMBIT in a Dutch publication titled "AMBIT in Practice," and takes part in the global AMBIT community.
