Description

This workshop, “Everyone Wants to Hold the Baby, Who Will Hold the Mother?”, explores the universal needs of mothers and birthing people, emphasizing the critical connection between lactation support and postpartum well-being. Participants will examine maternal mental health as a public health priority, including the continuum of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and their impact on breastfeeding outcomes. Through guided discussion and applied strategies, attendees will learn to integrate mental health screening with lactation support in clinical and community settings. The session equips participants with evidence-based tools, referral pathways, and interdisciplinary approaches to provide culturally responsive, whole-person care.

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the relationship between perinatal mental health and lactation outcomes, including the impact of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs).

  • Analyze how integrating mental health screening with lactation support influences clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.

  • Apply evidence-based, culturally responsive strategies to support birthing people experiencing perinatal mental health challenges, including use of referral pathways and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Educational Goal

The educational goal is for participants to be able to apply integrated perinatal mental health and lactation strategies to improve clinical outcomes for birthing people and families.
