  • Summarize at least four research studies that deal with suicide cognition.

  • Identify and describe current best practices for assessing clients for clients with suicidal ideation.

  • Explain best practices for teaching suicide cognition and other concepts learned to counseling students and interns.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is for attendees to learn about suicide cognition, how to teach the concept to students and interns, and how to better understand and assess suicidal ideation in their clients.

Description

For years, what is taught and practiced in counseling, as in many fields, trails behind current research. Is it true that anti-depressants cause suicidal thoughts? Do energy levels cause suicide; are they a symptom of suicidal thinking, or something else? Stephen Nichols, a researcher and member of the American Association of Suicidology, discusses some of the myths still taught and practiced in our field despite several strong studies to the contrary.

Presenters

Stephen A. Nichols, LMHCA, NCC
Stephen Nichols is currently a PhD candidate in counseling education and supervision at University of the Cumberlands. He holds a BS from Indiana University Kokomo and an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of the Cumberlands. He is licensed in the state of Indiana, nationally board-certified, and a suicidologist with AAS. His research interests are suicide cognition and the history and systems of suicide theories. He guest lectures at several universities on these subjects. He holds honor society memberships in counseling (Chi Sigma Iota) and psychology (Psi Chi). Stephen is the clinical director for a county-level juvenile detention/emergency adolescent shelter facility. He provides consultation and emergency intervention services for various non-profits and agencies, including coroner departments, an Air Force base, and legal offices needing expert testimony regarding suicide.
