Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects millions of individuals and families each year and can have lasting effects on emotional well-being, relationships, and child development. This presentation provides an overview of IPV, including common risk factors, warning signs, and assessment considerations. Participants will explore the impact of IPV on children, caregivers, and family systems. Evidence-based strategies for intervention, support, and promoting resilience will also be discussed

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to understand the impact of IPV on children and families, and gain evidence-based treatment strategies to address this impact in an effort to promote health and healing

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe at least three impacts of intimate partner violence on individuals, children, and families.

  • Identify two key considerations for assessing intimate partner violence, including recognizing relationship dynamics and selecting appropriate screening strategies.

  • Apply two evidence-informed intervention approaches to support adults, children, and families affected by intimate partner violence

Laura Craven PhD, LPC, LPCS
Laura Craven PhD, LPC, LPCS is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Assistant Teaching Professor in Counselor Education at East Carolina University. She has eight years of experience counseling children and families who have experienced various forms of trauma, including intimate partner violence. She researches and presents on the neurobiological impacts of trauma and effective counseling strategies tailored for trauma survivors.
