Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the six thinking hats and their corresponding roles within a flexible supervision framework and supervision conversations.

  • Identify four cognitive and emotional postures that reduce clinician bias, increase empathy, and promote counselor self-efficacy and professional development.

  • Utilize three evidence-informed andragogical techniques designed to foster cognitive complexity across different supervisory roles, foci, and conversational contexts.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to help attendees identify their six roles as a clinical supervisor within a flexible supervision framework that reduces clinician bias, increases empathy, and promotes counselor self-efficacy and professional development.

Description

This session introduces a flexible, creative, and developmentally attuned supervision framework. Centering supervision as an ongoing conversation, the workshop provides experiential activities, demonstration, and practical applications. Participants will learn how each hat cultivates distinct supervisory functions, facilitating supervisee self-efficacy, self-compassion, and client conceptualization skills through intentional shifts in perspective. Designed for supervisors but applicable to all counselors, this session offers an integrative approach to strengthening purposeful, growth-oriented, compassionate supervision conversations.

Presenters

Dr. Mandy Kellums Baraka, PhD, LCPC, NCC, RPT-S, is a clinical mental health counselor, counselor educator, and supervisor based in the Chicagoland suburbs. Dr. Baraka serves as an Associate Professor in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Wheaton College, where she trains emerging counselors in reflective, developmentally attuned practice. Her clinical and teaching experience spans work with children, adolescents, and adults, with a particular focus on supervision, multicultural considerations, play therapy and creativity in counseling, and cultivating confident, ethically grounded clinicians.
