Educational Goal
Description
Seniors with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders are an underserved population. Misbelief that seniors do not suffer from substance use disorders, denial on the part of the older adult, and lack of provider awareness about effective treatment interventions to serve this population have been barriers to providing the care they need. As providers of behavioral health services, we must consider how we care for this aging population and whether or not the way we care for our senior patients is best meeting their needs.
