Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe scientific evidence for pain-CBT treatment to improve cancer-related chronic pain

  • Apply up to two pain-CBT techniques for patients with cancer related pain

  • Develop skills to to describe biopsychosocial pain management to a patient with cancer-related chronic pain.

  • Apply biopsychosocial principles to conceptualize psychological and behavioral aspects of a patients' chronic pain experience with cancer.

  • Explain the importance of integrating biopsychosocial pain treatment into their cancer care

Educational Goal

The educational goal of the workshop is to provide the evidence base behind psychological treatment for cancer and chronic pain treatment, as well as identify primary components of pain-cognitive behavioral therapy and understand methods of applications for patients with cancer and chronic pain.

Description

In this course we will review an introduction of the evidence base behind biopsychosocial treatments for cancer pain, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy for pain. We will introduce and review pain-CBT manualized treatment for patients with cancer and chronic pain. We will describe examples of pain-CBT treatment applied to patients with cancer-related pain.

Presenters

Desiree Azizoddin is a pain psychologist and behavioral scientist at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. She completed a post-doctoral clinical fellowship in Pain Psychology at Stanford University and then completed a post-doctoral research research fellowship at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School. Before that she completed her internship at the Jesse Brown VA in Chicago in Health Psychology, and her doctoral degree at Loma Linda University in California. Her research specializes in developing novel behavioral pain management interventions for cancer patients using opioids. Her research is funded by an NCI K08 Career Development Award and NCI R21. She is a co-investigator on other NCI-funded awards and previously received a Jack Kornfeld Scholars Award from the National Palliative Care Research Center.
