Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least three fertility and family-building pathways commonly utilized by LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples.

  • Describe key mental health stressors associated with LGBTQIA+ fertility and adoption, including minority stress, grief, and identity-related challenges.

  • Apply LGBTQIA+-affirming, trauma-informed assessment strategies when supporting clients prior to and during fertility or adoption processes.

  • Implement at least two evidence-based therapeutic interventions to support emotional regulation and resilience.

  • Demonstrate advocacy-informed clinical practices to address systemic, legal, and healthcare barriers impacting LGBTQIA+ clients.

Educational Goal

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the unique mental health impacts of fertility and family-building for LGBTQIA+ individuals, grounded in minority stress and affirmative care frameworks. Attendees will leave with practical, trauma-informed strategies to assess, support, and advocate for LGBTQIA+ clients navigating fertility, adoption, and related emotional challenges.

Description

This workshop explores the mental health implications of fertility, adoption, and family-building for LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples. Participants will review fertility pathways while examining unique stressors such as minority stress, grief, identity shifts, relational strain, and systemic barriers. The training highlights the role of mental health providers in offering affirming, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care. Practical strategies including assessment, psychoeducation, advocacy, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions are discussed to support ethical and effective clinical practice.

Presenters

Giana Simonelli, MA, LAC, is a Licensed Associate Counselor based in New Jersey with extensive experience working across higher levels of care, including Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) serving adolescents and their families. Her clinical work is grounded in affirming, trauma-informed, and relational approaches, with particular emphasis on supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals, marginalized communities, and clients navigating identity development, anxiety and depression, emotional regulation, and complex life transitions. Giana integrates evidence-based modalities such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and person-centered frameworks, while prioritizing authenticity, accessibility, and real-world applicability in both clinical and educational spaces. She is especially passionate about bridging the gap between theory and practice, helping clinicians build confidence in applying skills ethically, compassionately, and effectively with diverse populations. In addition to her clinical work, Giana is actively involved in professional education, advocacy, and interdisciplinary collaboration. She contributes to professional conferences, trainings, and clinician-focused programming. Her professional interests include mental health equity, LGBTQIA+ affirming care, reproductive and fertility-related mental health, and clinician sustainability. As an educator, Giana brings a warm, direct, and engaging style that centers clinical competence, ethical practice, and reflective growth. She is committed to creating learning environments that are inclusive, practical, and grounded in the realities clinicians face in their everyday work.
