Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the core principles of contemplative psychology that support the development of an authentic, compassionate therapeutic presence.

  • Examine principles from contemplative psychology that help create therapeutic environments that promote safety, connection, and psychological well-being.

  • Apply contemplative psychology strategies to help clients recognize and build upon existing strengths, resilience, and moments of psychological clarity in the recovery process.

Educational Goal

This presentation aims to enhance clinicians' ability to intentionally cultivate a therapeutic presence grounded in contemplative psychology and to apply relationship-centered practices that strengthen the therapeutic alliance, create psychologically safe healing environments, and support clients in recognizing and building upon their inherent strengths and capacity for recovery.

Description

Abstract: Studies have shown that the therapeutic relationship is the most important predictive factor for successful therapy, and yet clinical training tends to emphasize assessment, symptomology, and psychological theory over relationship development. Drawing on the field of contemplative psychology, this presentation will demonstrate how to cultivate an authentic, open, compassionate presence to promote recovery, how this stance can foster sane environments to uncover and cultivate islands of clarity, and how to help clients connect with their natural, brilliant sanity.
