This intermediate-level course explores the physiology of acute withdrawal and post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS), equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge to recognize and respond to withdrawal-related symptoms. Participants will learn to identify common physical, psychological, and behavioral manifestations of withdrawal, distinguish signs of PAWS, and recognize life-threatening complications that require immediate clinical intervention. Through evidence-based education, learners will strengthen their ability to support patient safety and improve outcomes across the continuum of addiction treatment and recovery.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this training is to provide an overview of the expected course of acute and post-acute withdrawal and appropriate treatment methodologies.

Participants will be able to:

  • Outline the physiology of acute withdrawal and post-acute withdrawal syndrome.

  • Explain at least two common symptoms of withdrawal and post-acute withdrawal syndrome.

  • Identify life-threatening signs and at least two symptoms of withdrawal.

  • Evaluate common approaches to the management of withdrawal and post-acute withdrawal syndrome.

Ashley M. Gardner, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, CARN-AP, NEA-BC, CPHQ is the Enterprise Vice President of Nursing for Recovery Centers of America, where she provides strategic and clinical leadership for addiction treatment services across multiple states. With more than a decade of experience in addiction medicine, behavioral health, nursing leadership, quality improvement, and clinical operations, Dr. Gardner is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Certified Addictions Registered Nurse–Advanced Practice (CARN-AP). Dr. Gardner earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nurse Executive Leadership and is recognized for her expertise in substance use disorder treatment, withdrawal management, and medication assisted treatment. She is passionate about advancing evidence-based addiction care and educating healthcare professionals on best practices in the assessment and management of withdrawal and post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS).
