David Caruso

David was a National Institute of Child Health and Human Development pre-doctoral fellow and received a Ph.D. in Psychology from Case Western Reserve University. He was then awarded a National Institute of Mental Health fellowship and spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow in Developmental Psychology at Yale University.

Following the post-doc, he held corporate roles in market research, corporate planning, product management and executive assessment. He also served as a research affiliate in the Department of Psychology at Yale. David was a Group Research Manager at a market research firm, worked in corporate planning and product management at a Fortune 200 manufacturing firm, later conducted executive assessment for a HR consulting firm, and for 16 years held a part-time role as the special assistant for organizational development in the Office of the Dean of Yale College.

David founded EI Skills Group to provide training and assessment on the ability model of emotional intelligence (EI). Over the years he has provided assessment feedback to thousands of people and conducted dozens of hands-on, skill-building sessions on EI. He has spoken on emotional intelligence to audiences around the world (Brazil to Ireland to China to Saudi Arabia), applying the hard skills of emotional intelligence to different fields (e.g., American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Google, Lockheed Martin, Procore, US Coast Guard Academy, US Military Academy, US Naval War College, World Economic Forum, Yale School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Yale School of Medicine).

David is a co-author of the Mayer – Salovey – Caruso Emotional Intelligence Tests. He and Peter Salovey wrote the trade book, The Emotionally Intelligent Manager. David is a co-author (with Lisa Rees) of The Leader’s Guide to Solving Challenges with Emotional Intelligence and with Lisa and David Adams of the Educator’s Practical Guide to Emotional Intelligence. David has also published numerous articles – peer reviewed journal articles, reviews and chapters - on emotional intelligence.
