Description

LGBTQ+ individuals experience health disparities related to substance use disorders and mental health conditions, but not all mental health providers understand the unique needs of LGBTQ+ clients. In this session, you will learn about relevant statistics related to mental health and substance use disorders affecting LGBTQ+ adolescents, adults, and their families, as well as what factors contribute to these experiences. You will also learn about LGBTQ+ terminology, basic skills for integrating LGBTQ+-affirming care into your practice, and specific strategies for supporting LGBTQ+ clients and their families.

Presenters

Jordan Westcott, PhD, NCC
Jordan Westcott, PhD, NCC is an Assistant Professor in Counselor Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her research, service, and previous practice focuses on advancing mental health equity for LGBTQ+ persons across the lifespan. She has published 19 peer-reviewed articles and participated in or led more than 40 peer-reviewed conferences at international, national, regional, and state levels. She has a long history of leadership and advocacy in the mental health profession, resulting in leading national committees, winning awards at the national level, and serving LGBTQ+ and counseling organizations in other capacities.
