This course examines the impact of weight discrimination and weight stigma in healthcare, particularly for patients in larger bodies and those experiencing or recovering from eating disorders. Participants will explore how weight-based assumptions can affect health, treatment, trust, and access to care. The course will introduce principles of weight-inclusive medicine and provide practical strategies for discussing weight and health, supporting patients as they navigate the healthcare system, and advocating for compassionate, equitable, and patient-centered care.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the impact of weight stigma on health and healthcare.

  • Apply the principles of weight-inclusive medicine to patient discussions of weight and health.

  • Reduce the impact of weight stigma on your patients by advocating effectively for them within the healthcare system.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase participants' ability to identify the impacts of weight discrimination and weight stigma in healthcare and their impact on patients in larger bodies and those experiencing or recovering from eating disorders, while providing practical strategies to support patients in navigating the healthcare system and promoting patient-centered care.

Presenters

Dr. Jillian Moshay, MD, is a board-certified family medicine physician and certified eating disorder specialist with a focused practice in the medical care of patients with eating disorders. She has experience caring for patients across a range of treatment settings, including outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, and residential levels of care. Dr. Moshay is passionate about increasing awareness and understanding of eating disorders within the medical community and is actively involved in educating and teaching medical professionals. She is also a founding member of Association of Size and Weight Inclusive Medicine (ASWIM), reflecting her commitment to providing compassionate, equitable, and size-inclusive medical care. Dr. Moshay currently serves as a medical provider at The Emily Program’s residential program in Seattle, Washington.
Lisa Erlanger, MD
Dr. Lisa Erlanger, MD, is a Board Certified Family Physician and Clinical Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Her practice has focused on the care of marginalized populations, with a focus on larger-bodied patients and those with eating disorders. She is the founding president of the Association for Weight and Size Inclusive Medicine, where she promotes advocacy and education focused on trauma-informed, anti-bias, evidence-based compassionate care of patients across the weight spectrum. She is a certified Body Trust Provider through the Center for Body Trust, and supports other physicians in their personal and professional explorations of anti-diet work. In her free time, you'll find her in the woods on a horse or having a great meal with her family.
