When Outpatient Isn't Enough: Level of Care Decision Making for Teens & Young Adults

|

Information

Date & Time

Description

When an individual is struggling in outpatient therapy, determining when higher levels of care are needed can be a difficult decision for clinicians and families to face. This webinar will provide practical tools for recognizing clinical indicators that a higher level of care is needed, distinguishing between varying levels of symptom severity, and supporting families of adolescents and young adults through the treatment decision process.

Attendees will also learn effective strategies for helping families establish healthy boundaries while avoiding shame, enabling, and power struggles. Finally, we will explore evidence-based criteria for evaluating treatment programs and identifying potential red flags, providing clinicians with greater confidence when making thoughtful referrals for their clients.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify 3 clinical indicators that suggest outpatient therapy is no longer sufficient for adolescents and a referral to a higher level of care is needed.

  • Differentiate 4 characteristics of mild substance misuse and moderate-to-severe substance use requiring higher levels of care.

  • Apply 5 skills to help families implement healthy boundaries without reinforcing shame, enabling, or power struggles.

  • Explain 4 evidence-based criteria to evaluate treatment programs, including identifying common red flags.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to identify clinical indicators for adolescents and young adults to determine when referral to a higher level of care is warranted, evaluate SUD treatment program quality, and apply practical strategies for supporting families through treatment engagement
