Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify how autoimmune and chronic health conditions (e.g., EDS, POTS, MCAS, fibromyalgia) intersect with and influence eating disorder presentation and treatment.

  • Recognize common patterns of misidentification and diagnostic ambiguity, and apply strategies to navigate clinical uncertainty and communication challenges.

  • Implement patient-centered, collaborative approaches to care that effectively address treatment barriers in individuals with co-occurring chronic illness and eating disorders.

Educational Goal

Autoimmune and chronic conditions like EDS, POTS, and MCAS often intersect with eating disorders in complex, frequently misunderstood ways that can lead to misdiagnosis and patients feeling dismissed. This talk highlights how these conditions present in ED care, offering practical strategies to navigate diagnostic uncertainty, communication challenges, and treatment barriers. Participants will leave better equipped to provide collaborative, patient-centered care—even when symptoms are unclear, evolving, or not yet formally diagnosed.

Description

Autoimmune and chronic health conditions deserve our attention. Chronic illness, including Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), fibromyalgia, and related conditions, can predate, exacerbate, and overlap with eating dysfunction. Yet these presentations are frequently misunderstood or misidentified—complicating treatment and often leaving patients feeling dismissed or unheard. Whether you are familiar with these conditions or encountering them for the first time, this session is designed to meet you where you are. Therapist and author of Chronic Illness and Eating Disorders, Tamie Gangloff, will be joining us from the Ehlers-Danlos National Conference in Dallas to offer a specialized presentation for our community. Drawing from both clinical expertise and lived experience with multiple chronic conditions and medical trauma, Tamie will explore how these diagnoses commonly present within eating disorder care. She will address the diagnostic ambiguity that often accompanies complex or “mystery” symptoms and provide practical guidance for navigating common clinical dilemmas, communication challenges, and treatment barriers. Participants will leave better equipped to respond thoughtfully, ethically, and effectively when encountering these conditions—whether they are confirmed, suspected, or self-identified—while maintaining a patient-centered, collaborative approach to care.
