Participants will gain competency in identifying and treating high functioning alcoholics and substance use disorder.

Description

Using the educator’s personal story as a case-study, this workshop will explore the characteristics, personality traits, recovery, and treatment challenges of high-functioning alcoholics and Substance Use Disorders. The “continuum” of alcohol and Substance Use Disorders will be discussed as well as diagnostic challenges. Additional treatment and prevention suggestions will be offered that are unique for this population. Evidence-based integrated treatment for dual diagnosis care will be denied and treatment strategies will be described. Finally, shame as a barrier to treatment for this population will be explored.

Sarah Benton

Sarah Allen Benton, MS, LMHC, LPC, AADC is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor. She is Co-Owner of Benton Behavioral Health Consulting, Clinical Consultant for Aware Recovery Care, MA, and The Strathmore House transitional sober living for men in Boston, Massachusetts. She worked previously as the Clinical Director at Aware Recovery Care in-home addiction treatment in Connecticut, in private practice as an addiction therapist at Insight Counseling in Ridgefield, CT, Turnbridge extended care in New Haven, CT, and at McLean Hospital at McLean Brook transitional living program for dual diagnosis in Belmont, MA. She is a seasoned international speaker, author of the book, “Understanding the High-Functioning Alcoholic” and has been featured frequently in the media including the NY Times, and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, The CBS Early Show, NPR, SiriusXM and is a blogger for PsychologyToday.com.
