In the age of the dark web and social media platforms, young people are continuing to access new substances of misuse. This presentation will give information about the current substance use trends of adolescents and young adults under the age of 25 based on the Monitoring the Future and National Survey on Drug Use and Health data sets. Current substances of misuse and methods will be described, as well as how young people access these substances. Finally, this presentation will outline evidence-based practices of substance use treatment and recovery for adolescents and young adults.

Educational Goal

Participants will gain an updated understanding of substance use trends among adolescents and young adults under 25, including commonly used substances and methods of use. The presentation supports clinical growth by strengthening the application of developmentally appropriate, evidence-based treatment and recovery strategies.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least three current substance use trends among adolescents and young adults under the age of 25.

  • Recognize at least three commonly used substances and methods of use within this population.

  • Analyze at least two evidence-based treatment or recovery approaches appropriate for adolescents and young adults.

  • Apply developmentally appropriate intervention strategies to a case example involving substance use in individuals under 25.

Presenters

Ashton Tisdale, LISW-CP, LAC, AADC is the owner of Ashton Doby Counseling, LLC and has been in private practice full-time for over 4 years. She originally graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2012 with a Bachelor of Sciences in Psychology degree, and then graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2014 with a Masters in Social Work. She started her professional career working in intensive outpatient treatment programs for adolescents and adults with substance use disorders, and also worked for a year on an inpatient detoxification unit. Ashton also worked for the South Carolina physician's monitoring program, as well as at the Counseling Center at the University of South Carolina. Ashton has been a certified and licensed addiction counselor for over 9 years and considers herself an expert in working with individuals with substance use disorders, as well as their family members. Ashton is a Certified Trauma Resolution Energy Therapy (TRET) Practitioner and is extensively trained in Redecision Therapy and Schema Therapy. Ashton also regularly works with individuals who have mental health and trauma disorders, as well as families experiencing conflict and communication problems. Ashton is happily married and has 2 sons, as well as 2 dog sons, and loves living in South Carolina!
