The educational goal of this workshop is to expand participants' clinical perspective on treatment-resistant neuropsychiatric disorders by exploring the role of thorough evaluation, advanced diagnostic tools, and individualized treatment approaches. Learners will develop skills to better identify underlying contributors to treatment failure and optimize future clinical decision-making.

Description

Treatment-resistant neuropsychiatric disorders often stem from unidentified underlying biological, neurological, or metabolic factors rather than true treatment failure. This presentation explores common contributors to treatment resistance and the impact of co-occurring conditions like traumatic brain injury, sleep disorders, and autoimmune dysfunction on mental health outcomes. Participants will examine advanced assessment strategies, including functional brain imaging, neuropsychiatric evaluation, laboratory testing, and other diagnostic tools, to better understand complex presentations. Through case studies, attendees will learn how to utilize comprehensive evaluations to develop individualized, targeted interventions that improve patient outcomes. This presentation encourages clinicians to reconsider the concept of treatment resistance and adopt a more comprehensive, individualized framework for evaluating and treating complex neuropsychiatric conditions.

Presenters

Steve Best, MD is a psychiatrist based in Deerfield, IL, with subspecialties in Psychiatry, Neuropsychiatry of children & adults, Imaging, Brain Stimulation, Pain Medicine, and Psychopharmacology. He completed his fellowship in Neuropsychiatry at Chicago Medical School/Rosalind Franklin University after attending medical school and completing various training at the University of Cincinnati and Charleston Area Medical Center. He has been the Director of The Neuroscience Center since 1996 and has expertise in brain stimulation and perfusion activation with the combination therapy of TMS/ketamine. Dr. Best has published works on novel treatment evaluations in psychiatry and participated in clinical trials on neuromodulation to enhance outcomes.
