Description
This workshop will examine the attempts to improve institutional care during the Enlightenment period. Key figures in the history of psychiatric treatment and their contributions to the movement for more humane treatment of individuals with serious mental illness will be examined. Finally, current examples of therapeutic communities that evolved from efforts during the Enlightenment period will be discussed.

Participants will be able to:

Name at least three significant historical figures who attempted to transform the asylum into a therapeutic environment.

List the two key elements of a therapeutic asylum.

Name at least one therapeutic community that exists today that was derived from the evolution of the therapeutic asylums of the Enlightenment period.
