Date & Time

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe two or more criticisms of the limitations of the diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria when conducting assessments with their clients.

  • Identify two or more clinical interventions or theories that consider gender dysphoria through an intersectional lens.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip attendees with the knowledge needed to explore their client’s lived experiences of gender dysphoria outside of the diagnostic criteria set forth by the DSM-V through an intersectional lens and to identify clinically appropriate therapeutic interventions.

Description

This session explores how gender dysphoria is often viewed through a narrow diagnostic lens, leaving providers, parents, and clients alike with an incomplete understanding of what gender dysphoria is and how it might present. This narrow view necessitates providers to expand their view and understanding of the lived experience of gender dysphoria and clinically appropriate treatments and interventions. Considerations of intersectionality will also be discussed.
