This workshop examines the impact of social media on clients presenting with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and Eating Disorders (ED) and the role providers play in helping our patients navigate the digital landscape. We will discuss how media can trigger higher rates of relapse behaviors and the opportunity clinicians have to drive change and sustained remission from SUDS or Eating Disorders. Clinicians will build toolkit of how to discuss these topics with clients.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least two tools and/or strategies to assist clients with SUD and ED engage in recovery friendly social media behaviors.

  • Describe the risk factors of relapse associated with social media usage for clients with SUD and ED.

  • Explain how to execute an algorithmic reset to promote recovery content.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to provide Clinicians with tools to assist SUDS/ED clients to engage in recovery friendly behaviors while utilizing Social Media.

Presenters

Morgan Hurston, MSc, RD is a clinical dietitian whose primary focus is in behavioral health and eating disorders. She currently works at The Refuge in Ocklawaha, FL as the Oak House Residential Behavioral Health and Eating Disorder Dietitian. Morgan's background in Nutrition dates back to a Bachelor's degree in concurrent Psychology and Nutrition Dietetics at Auburn University, and a Master's Degree in Clinical Nutrition at University of Roehampton in London. Morgan completed her dietetic internship at the James A. Haley Veteran's Hospital. She has completed two research projects in her academic career.
