This presentation will explore the science and research behind the complex gut brain relationship. Topics will include the impact of nutrient absorption on neurotransmitter creation, the enteric nervous system, and the relationship between the microbiome in our digestive track our mental health, complex pain and addiction. Will include a review of digestive disorders and their relationship to mental health.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Explain 5 ways common medications impact digestion.

  • Identify 5 biological connections between the enteric nervous system and the central nervous system as they relate to mental health and pain.

  • Assess 4 specific effects of the GI microbiome on mental health and pain.

  • Discuss 6 clinical strategies to improve patient outcomes by optimizing digestion.

Presenters

Maureen Schwehr, NMD, is a licensed Naturopathic Medical Doctor who has worked in Tucson, Arizona for the last 20 years. Her experience includes the position of Medical Director at Mirasol Recovery Centers and over 10 years of private practice. She is currently the Director of Integrative Services at Sierra Tucson. In addition to supervising staff, she works one on one with residents to help them determine the root cause of their problems. Focus is given to nutritional status, supporting biochemical pathways that help the body function more effectively and hormonal balance. Dr. Schwehr has a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington.
