Description

The Endurance Leader is a new model of leadership that challenges leaders to move outside of their short-term, immediate goal orientation and expand what it means to lead at their best. At a time when research shows that stress (including work stress), chronic illness, and mental health diagnoses in America are at an all-time high (American Psychological Association, 2023; Gallup, 2023), our coaching clients and their organizations are in desperate need of new solutions. The Endurance Leader provides such an alternative; by borrowing from the thinking, practices, and support structures of endurance athletes, leaders can remain motivated, engaged, and productive for the long-term. This session will introduce participants to the Endurance Leadership four-part model and encourage learning more about each through case studies, small group, and large group discussion. In addition, participants will have time for reflective work that will give them firsthand opportunity to engage with the model and make it meaningful for themselves. 1) Anchor Your Mindset: Understanding the importance of discerning one’s ideal mission/ideal self has been shown to increase activity in the creative and growth-oriented parts of the brain (Boyatzis, 2013) and increase intrinsic motivation (Cinar, Betkas, & Aslan, 2011). The session will help coaches bring Ideal Self activities into their client work and help them keep them alive through meaningful and sustainable plans. 2) Excel in Execution: To help leaders maintain an endurance focus, they must continually train their mental and behavioral “muscles.” Using concepts such as Minimum Viable Effort (Fogg, 2018) and techniques consistent with successful self-reflection (Lanaj, Foulk, & Erez, 2019), participants will learn effective strategies for keeping leaders focused on long-term goals. 3) Forge Discipline: Concepts such as Mental toughness, agility and learning from failure are critical to long-term leadership success (Cannon & Edmonson, 2005; Dweck, 2014; Krupp and Hogan, 2021) and are important for managing uncertainty which is often seen in disruptive and ever-changing work environments. Participants will learn new frameworks for these well-studied concepts, and explore new ways of bringing their relevance to their coaching clients. 4) Leverage Support: Participants will explore particularly the efficacy of coaching, mentoring, and feedback (Kavussanu et al., 2008; Boysen, 2018) as well as the increasing popularity of wearable technologies and advancements in AI to help leaders manage their energy, effort, and focus. (Ruderman & Clerkin, 2020; Reitz & Higgins, 2024). Participants will also understand how gratitude practices are closely tied to long-term leadership success (Chen et al., 2017; Redwine et al., 2016), and the criticality of collaboration and community engagement to long-term personal and leadership outcomes.
