Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify treatment gaps and barriers/facilitators to care for people with substance use disorders (SUDs)

  • Explain current evidence on telehealth approaches to increasing and improving outcomes for patients with SUDs

  • Describe impacts of COVID-19 on SUD telehealth policies and on SUD medication and psychotherapy treatment

  • Discuss innovations in models of telehealth and considerations for telehealth-delivered SUD care in order to improve treatment COVID-19 and beyond

The educational goal of this workshop is to help participants learn more about evidence and role of telehealth in substance use disorder care.

Description

This session will focus on the evolving role of telehealth in substance use disorder care. Dr. Lin will present research examining effectiveness of different telehealth modalities on treatment use and outcomes and incorporate perspectives of patients and clinicians. Finally, Dr. Lin will discuss how telehealth continues to evolve and broader issues around improving access to substance use disorder care.

Presenters

Lewei (Allison) Lin MD, MS, DFASAM

Allison Lin, MD is an addiction psychiatrist and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry as well as Research Scientist at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. Dr. Lin is also Co-Director of MI-ACRE, Director of the U-M Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program, President of the Michigan Society of Addiction Medicine, and American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry Research Committee Chair. Her research is informed by her clinical work treating patients with addiction and recognizing the potential for healthcare systems to help address this major public health crisis. Her research focuses on identifying actionable contributors, gaps, and disparities in access and quality of addiction care using large healthcare datasets and developing new interventions and models of care, including through use of telehealth, to improve reach and delivery of evidence-based care to patients.
