Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the current landscape and clinical evidence supporting digital therapeutics (DTx) in addiction treatment.

  • Analyze key regulatory pathways and policy considerations affecting the adoption of DTx across U.S. and international systems.

  • Evaluate systemic barriers to DTx implementation, including engagement challenges, reimbursement models, and clinical workflow integration.

  • Apply strategies for selecting, validating, and integrating digital tools into addiction treatment to improve patient outcomes.

Educational Goal

This session aims to enhance participants’ professional sophistication by equipping them with a critical understanding of the digital therapeutics landscape in addiction care. Attendees will gain the clinical and regulatory insights needed to integrate evidence-based digital tools into practice, ultimately improving treatment outcomes, patient engagement, and system-wide accessibility.

Description

Digital therapeutics (DTx) hold immense promise for addiction treatment, offering clinically validated, technology-driven interventions to address a growing global crisis. Yet despite strong evidence — including nearly 450 clinical trials and multiple peer-reviewed publications — the field faces a striking gap between innovation and real-world implementation. This session explores the current landscape of addiction-focused digital therapeutics, drawing on data from ongoing trials, regulatory pathways (FDA, EMA, DiGA), and case studies such as reSET®. It examines why, despite clear clinical need, only three FDA-approved addiction DTx exist — and why adoption is stalled by high dropout rates, reimbursement complexity, and provider workflow challenges. With insight across stakeholder groups, the session equips attendees with data, strategies, and global perspectives to better navigate the intersection of technology and treatment.
