Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Summarize current trends, data, and adoption of value-based care models in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment across various levels of care.

  • Identify the technology infrastructure (interoperable EHRs, AI-driven decision support, data analytics) necessary to participate in value-based care programs in behavioral health.

  • Discuss emerging reimbursement models, innovations (e.g. AI, remote monitoring, digital therapeutics), and financial strategies – that are shaping the future of value-based substance use treatment.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this course is to explain the principles of value-based care and how they differ from traditional fee-for-service models and to explore Technology Infrastructure Requirements for Value-Based Care Success (i.e., evaluate the role of EHR interoperability, AI-driven decision support, and data analytics in VBC).

Description

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) providers must skillfully balance traditional fee-for-service models with emerging values-based care (VBC) paradigms. VBC is any payor or plan that reimburses care in some alternate payment model that utilizes client/patient outcomes to determine payment. This dual approach is akin to navigating downstream with one foot in each of two canoes–one representing established practices and the other embodying innovative, values-driven methodologies. Successfully managing this strategy requires a deep understanding of operational efficiency and adaptive innovation, ensuring providers remain competitive and responsive to evolving industry demands.
