Today's military families face complex challenges, yet few clinicians possess the specialized knowledge necessary to support them effectively. This workshop explores military culture and its impact on family systems. Grounded in the Preservation of the Force and Family domains, this course will provide clinicians with informed strategies to provide effective care.

Topics include: -Common challenges faced by military families -The lives of military spouses & children -Obstacles to care -Key considerations and best practices

By the end of this workshop, participants will be better prepared to provide support that honors the values and unique needs of military families.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is for participants to discover the challenges faced by military families. Guided by the POTFF domains and evidence-driven practices, participants will develop practical strategies to best support the overall wellbeing of the military family unit.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe military culture and its impact on family systems.

  • Differentiate between the needs of military families versus civilian communities in clinical care.

  • Evaluate personal cultural competence when working with military families.

  • Identify common challenges faced by military families, including those impacting individual members and the family system as a whole.

  • Outline common barriers and obstacles at all levels that limit access to care for military families.

  • Develop evidence-based strategies and the POTFF domains to best support military families.

  • Recognize personal biases and misconceptions that may hinder effective support for military families.

  • Construct individualized strategies to provide effective and unbiased care to military families.

Presenters

Kat McGrady, ED.D, LCPC, NCC, has experience as an educator, advisor, school counselor, and mental health therapist. Currently, Kat works in private practice as a therapist and parent coach. She also serves as an advisor and adjunct professor for the Johns Hopkins University Masters and Doctorate in Education programs, as well as for the University of Maryland Global Campus Psychology program.
