  • Implement integrated care models and interdisciplinary coordination strategies to optimize recovery outcomes for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip behavioral health professionals with the knowledge and clinical skills to effectively manage substance- and medication-induced mental disorders. Participants will learn to apply DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria, understand the role of psychopharmacotherapy, and implement integrated, interdisciplinary care strategies to improve outcomes for clients with co-occurring conditions.

Description

This clinical training provides an overview of substance and medication-induced mental disorders, with a focus on accurate assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Participants will examine DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria, differentiate substance-induced conditions from primary mental health disorders, and review evidence-based treatment approaches, including psychopharmacotherapy. The training also explores interdisciplinary team roles, integrated care models, and practical strategies for supporting individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health concerns. Emphasis is placed on improving clinical decision-making and promoting effective, coordinated care.

Presenters

Dr. Raymond Garcia, MD, FAPA, ABAM, oversees all medical operations for Rosecrance Behavioral Health and is the Medical Director for Rosecrance Therapies at Aspen Counseling in Rockford, Illinois. He is board-certified in psychiatry and neurology, licensed in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin, a member of the Illinois Psychiatric Society, and a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Garcia is also board-certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). Dr. Garcia is on faculty at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, where he has received the Golden Apple, Mentor of the Year, and Distinguished Teaching Awards. He joined Rosecrance in 2009.
