This webinar explores the unique and impactful role of peer support specialists in behavioral health and recovery-oriented systems of care. Participants will gain insight into how lived experience fosters trust, engagement, and hope among individuals receiving services. The session will highlight practical tools peers use to support employment readiness, goal-setting, and self-efficacy. Emphasis will also be placed on integrating peer roles within multidisciplinary teams. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to enhance recovery outcomes.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Define the role and core competencies of a peer support specialist within behavioral health settings.

  • Identify at least three ways lived experience enhances engagement and recovery outcomes.

  • Demonstrate two practical strategies peers use to support individuals in achieving vocational and personal goals.

  • Explain how peer support aligns with trauma-informed and recovery-oriented care principles.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is for participants to gain a clear understanding of how peer support contributes to recovery and employment outcomes, along with practical strategies to integrate peer-informed approaches into their work. The session aims to strengthen appreciation for lived experience as a critical component of effective care.

Presenters

Michael Leotis, CRSP, CPRS is a Peer Services Training Coordinator with the Mental Health Association in New Jersey. Michael is a person with lived experience and uses his experience to help peers successfully obtain and manage careers in the field. Since 2014, Michael has held several roles in his organization such as Wellness Center Manager and Director of Wellness and Training before landing as Statewide Peer Services Training Coordinator in 2025.
