This continuing education course explores spirituality as a core dimension of human functioning that influences cognition, emotion, motivation, behavior, and meaning-making across the lifespan. Participants will examine current interdisciplinary research from neuroscience, biology, psychology, anthropology, social psychology, religion, social work, and spirituality to better understand the relationship between spirituality, mental health, and well-being. The course emphasizes evidence-informed, culturally responsive approaches for integrating spiritual considerations into behavioral health assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning while remaining within professional ethical and scope-of-practice guidelines.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip professionals with an evidence-informed framework for understanding spirituality as a fundamental human function and to enhance their ability to integrate psycho-spiritual assessment and interventions into ethical, whole-person clinical care.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Define spirituality as a human function.

  • Apply evidence-informed psycho-spiritual interventions, including ritual-based practices, to enhance whole-person assessment and patient-centered care.

  • Describe how spirituality manifests in clinical practice, and evaluate the evidence supporting its role in health and well-being.

Presenters

Lance joined Hanley in 2021 as Chaplain and Spiritual Care Coordinator, providing spiritual care, emotional support, and counseling to individuals and families during times of crisis, loss, illness, or significant life transition. A Licensed Psychotherapist, Lance also holds certifications as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), Certified Advanced Grief Counseling Specialist (CAGCS), Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist (ASDCS), and Certified Mental Health Nutrition Specialist (CMNCS). With more than 20 years of ministry and pastoral leadership experience, he integrates spiritual care with evidence-based mental health practices, ensuring holistic support that respects diverse beliefs and values. His background includes pastoral leadership, clinical counseling, and chaplaincy work in hospitals, community settings, and faith-based organizations. Passionate about walking with people through life’s most difficult seasons, Lance is dedicated to helping individuals find meaning, hope, and resilience. He has developed spiritually integrated counseling programs, provided critical incident response in high-stress environments, and led trainings on resilience, mental health, and spiritual wellness. His work has earned recognition for compassionate, culturally competent care, including the 2018 Unsung Hero Award in Hamilton, Ohio. Outside of his professional role, Lance enjoys music, powerlifting, and meaningful time in community.
