Educational Goal
Description
This course provides an overview of current evidence examining the impact of social media and artificial intelligence (AI) on mental health self-diagnosis and help-seeking, including how these influences may shape decisions to pursue professional evaluation and treatment. Participants will explore how to describe and interpret the available evidence, distinguish meaningful clinical signals from diagnostic certainty, and critically evaluate claims about the relationship between self-diagnosis and help-seeking behaviors. The course will also address ethical considerations related to the use of AI in mental health, as well as cultural factors that may influence how individuals understand symptoms, seek information, and access treatment. Practical strategies will be provided to help clinicians respond to clients who present with self-diagnoses or AI-generated mental health information in ways that support assessment, therapeutic alliance, and appropriate referral without creating unnecessary rupture. By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to communicate uncertainty, evaluate help-seeking claims, and engage clients in collaborative, culturally responsive conversations about their mental health concerns and treatment options.
