Description
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy demonstrates significant efficacy in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related conditions. However, racial trauma—stemming from systemic oppression and identity-based discrimination—presents unique clinical challenges. Research indicates that racial trauma survivors frequently exhibit symptomatology analogous to complex trauma, yet dissociation and identity-related stressors remain underrecognized in clinical practice. Addressing these gaps is imperative given their substantial influence on symptom manifestation. Effective interventions must simultaneously facilitate complex trauma recovery and mitigate the psychological impacts of systemic marginalization.
This presentation advances the framework of Anti-Racist Psychotherapy while introducing Rhythm and Processing (RAP) Strategies—an innovative therapeutic approach addressing clinical deficiencies in treating comorbid complex PTSD and racial trauma. Rooted in Africentric paradigms and memory reconsolidation theory, RAP operationalizes Anti-Racist Psychotherapy principles to serve diverse populations experiencing intersectional mental health challenges. Particular emphasis will be placed on the application of RAP strategies for male-identified populations, with specialized focus on therapeutic interventions for Black men experiencing anti-Black racial trauma. The session will culminate in a 20-minute clinical demonstration of the RAP technique utilizing client-selected online sports media to process childhood trauma, showcasing this culturally-responsive intervention's clinical utility.
