Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is to highlight suicide as a pressing public health crisis examining its far-reaching personal and societal impacts. This presentation will equip participants to recognize key risk factors, conduct effective assessments, and apply evidenced-based treatment interventions for prevention.

Description

This presentation explores the complex issue of suicide through a clinical and compassionate lens. First, participants will examine how suicide is a public health crisis. Next, emphasis is placed on appraising the impact. People of all ages are afflicted, and Ethnicity / Race is disproportionately affected. Additionally, the effect of fatally harming oneself can create a Prolonged Grief Disorder, or Complicated Grief, in loved ones. The session also aims to enhance our understanding of up-to-date risk factors in the assessment of suicide. Finally, treatment interventions are outlined and assessment tools, brief interventions, and psychotherapies are reviewed.

Presenters

Dr. Ramirez is a Senior Executive Psychologist at Ashley Addiction Treatment, an inpatient setting for people who struggle with substance misuse and mental health problems. Dr. Ramirez works toward the mission to save lives through the science of medicine, art of therapy, and compassion of spirituality. Ashley was Ranked #1 by Newsweek for the best care in the United States. With 30 years of clinical experience, patients are treated with respect. They receive diagnostic assessments, psychotherapy, and trauma care. As a certified educator, peers receive training in Addiction Medicine. In contemporary research, Dr. Ramirez published an article with colleagues at Johns Hopkins University on the trends of older adults with Alcohol Use Disorders. Recently, Dr. Ramirez was an Expert Panelist on Addiction Medicine at a U.S. Congressional Convention in the District of Columbia.
