Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize indications for specific agents based on symptom profiles.​ ​

  • Identify pharmacologic treatment options for psychosis, including first- and second-generation antipsychotics, and recognize indications for specific agents based on symptom profiles.​ ​

  • Identify common and serious side effects of antipsychotic medications—such as extrapyramidal symptoms, tardive dyskinesia, metabolic syndrome, and hyperprolactinemia.

  • Explain appropriate monitoring and management strategies for side effects.​

  • Apply a bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework to psychosis management, including the use of psychosocial supports, individualized treatment planning, and strategies for medication tapering or switching when clinically appropriate.​

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this training is to enhance clinicians’ ability to accurately identify, assess, and manage psychosis through evidence-based interventions that improve patient safety and outcomes.

Description

This course provides an in-depth overview of psychosis, exploring its underlying mechanisms, clinical features, and treatment approaches. Participants will learn to differentiate between primary psychotic disorders and substance-induced presentations, conduct thorough evaluations, and implement evidence-based management strategies. Emphasis is placed on practical assessment skills, collaborative care, and improving outcomes for individuals experiencing psychotic symptoms.

Luke Bacon, MD, MBA
Luke Bacon, MD, MBA, is a board-certified adult psychiatrist based in Denver, Colorado. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, where he also completed a Certificate in Medical Ethics and Humanities, and his Master of Business Administration in Health Organization Management from Texas Tech University. Dr. Bacon completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he also served as Chief Resident. Currently practicing at Family Care Center in Denver, Dr. Bacon provides comprehensive psychiatric care with a focus on collaborative treatment planning, medication management, and helping patients better understand and optimize their mental health. His clinical interests include deprescribing strategies, management of treatment side effects, and individualized approaches to wellness.
