Description
This course is designed to enhance the clinical competence of healthcare professionals involved in nursing home consultation for older adults. Specifically, the course will review key considerations for providing psychiatric consultation in long-term care settings, including common mental health and behavioral issues, interdisciplinary collaboration, regulatory and documentation requirements, and strategies for effective communication with facility staff and families. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based approaches to assessment, treatment planning, and ongoing management of psychiatric and cognitive disorders within the unique environment of nursing homes.

Identify the most common psychiatric disorders in long-term care (LTC) settings, including their prevalence and clinical presentation.

Describe the components of a comprehensive psychiatric assessment in nursing home residents.

Differentiate between various types of major neurocognitive disorders using cognitive screening tools and diagnostic criteria.

Evaluate appropriate use of psychotropic medications, including compliance with CMS guidelines and criteria for gradual dose reduction.

Implement the DICE approach for managing neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia to improve resident quality of life.
