Educational Goal

The educational goal is to introduce participants to Neuro-Somatic Experiential Therapy.

Description

Neuro-Somatic Experiential Therapy (NSET) is an experiential, body-based approach designed to address the growing mental health challenges facing today’s “smartphone generation.” Adolescents are presenting with increased rates of anxiety, depression, isolation, attentional difficulties, emotional dysregulation, and diminished resilience, alongside decreased engagement in traditional talk-based therapy. This course explores how rapid technological change, constant digital stimulation, and reduced opportunities for embodied, relational experiences are reshaping adolescent neurodevelopment and therapeutic needs. Participants will be introduced to the theoretical and neurodevelopmental foundations of NSET, with particular emphasis on the impact of chronic screen exposure on brain functioning, emotional regulation, decision-making, and relational capacity. The presentation will examine how experiential, somatic, and outdoor-based interventions leverage bilateral movement, sensory engagement, and appropriate challenge to support nervous system regulation, integration of brain systems, and improved therapeutic engagement. This course is educationally necessary as many clinicians are observing that conventional, insight-oriented approaches alone are increasingly insufficient for adolescents who are overstimulated, disconnected from their bodies, and disengaged from in-person relationships. NSET provides a developmentally responsive framework that aligns with current research on movement, neuroplasticity, and experiential learning, offering clinicians concrete strategies for adapting treatment to the realities of modern adolescence.
