Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify key differences and underlying causes between chronic and acute suicidality.

  • Describe at least three distinct characteristics of both chronic and acute suicidality and discuss how these differences impact treatment approaches and patient management.

  • Explain the psychological and emotional roles that suicidal ideation may serve for individuals suffering from chronic suicidality and identify at least two purposes that this ideation can serve, enhancing their ability to empathize with and support their clients effectively without judgment.

  • Apply practical strategies for determining the level of imminent risk requiring hospitalization for clients with chronic suicidality, including specific assessment tools and criteria used to make informed decisions about when hospitalization is necessary to ensure patient safety.

  • Utilize techniques to treat chronic suicidality effectively while minimizing the risk of alienating or triggering clients.

  • List at least three strategies for maintaining a supportive therapeutic environment that respects the client's experiences and promotes long-term stability and recovery.

Description

Chronic suicidality is a critical challenge in mental health, marked by persistent thoughts of suicide that can lead to suicide attempts. This complex issue requires multifaceted approaches, including psychological support, practical skills, and ongoing risk assessment.

This presentation will address how we can better equip providers to apply innovative approaches to suicidality. We will present solutions by combining clinical techniques and lived experiences with chronic suicidality to create empathetic, effective treatment frameworks providers can use to help patients overcome the stigma and challenges associated with chronic suicidality.
