Description

Stepmothers often face profound role ambiguity and the crushing weight of the "wicked stepmother" stereotype, leading to high rates of depression and anxiety. The session will explore how the therapeutic relationship serves as the primary corrective relational experience. Attendees will learn to effectively utilize Rogers' Core Conditions—specifically Unconditional Positive Regard—to counteract external judgment. We will integrate practical Person-Centered and Existential techniques, such as exploring the "dread of freedom" and defining an authentic self-independent of rigid family roles.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Translate empirical findings on stepmother roles and mental health into humanistic concepts.

  • Demonstrate how the counseling relationship can offer a corrective relational experience for clients navigating role ambiguity.

  • Apply practice-ready applications rooted in Person-Centered and Existential approaches.

Educational Goal

This presentation offers counselors a theoretically grounded framework, translating empirical findings from quantitative research into actionable humanistic interventions.
