Educational Goal
The educational goal of this workshop is to provide clinically relevant overview of the mechanisms underlying nausea and vomiting in cancer treatment, alongside evidence-based pharmacologic and integrative management strategies.
Description
This session will review the causes and treatments for nausea and vomiting in patients receiving cancer treatment, focusing on symptoms and treatments that are relevant to psychologists in practice.

Presenters
Maria Silveira MD, MA, MPH
Dr. Silveira is a federally funded researcher, palliative care specialist, and ethicist at the University of Michigan and the LTC Kettles Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Medical Center. Her research aims to improve the management of pain and other symptoms related to cancer or cancer treatment. She is the recipient of funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Veterans Administration. Her research has been published in JPSM, JAGS, JAMA, and NEJM. She has held several editorial positions, including Associate Editor for the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management and UpToDate. In 2014, she was awarded fellow status by the AAHPM and was promoted to Associate Professor at the University of Michigan. She currently serves as the Director for Research for the UM’s Palliative Care Program. She teaches ethics, communication, and symptom management to students and trainees, and mentors fellows, junior faculty, and doctoral candidates in research. She also has an active inpatient and outpatient palliative care practice. Importantly, she has been a support and caregiver to three immediate family members who have battled cancer; this experience, above all else, has helped shape her perspective what palliative care and hospice can and can’t do.
Derek Gyori, PharmD, BCOP
Derek Gyori, PharmD, BCOP, is a Hematology/Oncology Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, where he also serves as the PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency Program Director. With over six years of experience in oncology pharmacy practice and academia, he has held prior roles as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the University of Toledo Medical Center and as an Associate Lecturer at The University of Toledo. His work focuses on advancing cancer care through clinical practice, education, and mentorship.
Suzanna M. Zick, ND, MPH
Dr. Zick is a Research Professor in Family Medicine and Nutritional Sciences and Co-Director of the Integrative Family Medicine Program at the University of Michigan. Dr. Zick’s research interests include the investigation of the impact and implementation of integrative therapies including self-acupressure and whole food diets for control of cancer-related symptoms of fatigue, sleep disturbance and quality of life. She has developed a mobile application to help implement self-acupressure into ‘real world’ clinical and community settings. Dr. Zick is the course director of an NCI education grant to teach oncology providers evidence-based integrative oncology and is working with the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) on developing competencies and curricular elements for integrative oncology fellowships. She is the Co-director of the SIO Clinical Practice Guideline Committee and was a panel member for the 2024 joint American Society for Clinical Oncology-SIO Fatigue in Cancer Clinical Practice Guidelines.
