This presentation will cover an understanding of what mindfulness is, the importance of building a mindfulness practice in addiction treatment, how to implement it in treatment, and will include an opportunity to practice mindfulness. Participants will walk away with a new or broader understanding of how mindfulness is an essential part of addiction treatment. We will cover additional resources to grow your understanding of mindfulness based interventions.

Presenters

Marlena Nip (LCSW) is a therapist working with adults with substance use and mental health disorders at Luna Integrated Care in Houston, TX. Marlena received her undergraduate degree at Loyola Marymount University in 2014 and her Masters in Social Work at the University of Houston in 2023. After spending six years in the education world as a teacher and school administrator she made the switch to social work. She spent her clinical internship year at The Hope and Healing Center & Institute in Houston, providing free CBT and DBT treatment for individuals struggling with mental health disorders. After graduate school, she worked in the Admissions department at The Menninger Clinic in Houston, TX. With a background in college swimming, Marlena has deep understanding and interest in working with athletes and former athletes navigating the niche experience and mindset of an athlete and transitioning to life after sports. At Luna, Marlena provides care for adults in PHP and IOP levels of care utilizing evidence-based interventions. She has an affinity to the mindfulness practice and helping client’s understand and build a mindfulness practice to navigate life’s discomforts with more grace and flexibility.
