Description
This presentation examines long-term pharmacotherapy for substance use disorders. We begin with an overview of the general principles of pharmacotherapy in substance use disorder treatment, followed by a more detailed discussion of the different types of medications used to treat nicotine, alcohol, and opioid use disorders and how they fit into comprehensive addiction treatment. This session aims to enhance clinicians’ confidence and competence in discussing addiction and treatment options with patients.

Educational Goal
The educational goal of this presentation is for participants to gain a deeper understanding of
pharmacologic treatments for substance use disorders and their integration into comprehensive care, enabling clinicians to provide informed patient education regarding treatment options, make appropriate prescribing decisions, and facilitate effective referrals.

Presenters
Michael Weaver, MD, DFASAM is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Center for Neurobehavioral Research on Addiction at the McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He is Board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. He is currently involved in patient care, medical education, and research. Dr. Weaver sees patients in the Innovations Addiction Treatment Clinic at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. He has extensive experience teaching about addiction to trainees and professionals at all levels. He is involved in multiple research projects and has multiple publications in the field of addiction medicine.
