Description
This workshop addresses the gap between evidence-based standards for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and what is routinely practiced in clinical settings. Although MAT is a first-line, life-saving intervention, many clinicians lack confidence initiating medications, managing dosing, or integrating MAT with ongoing care, resulting in delayed or inconsistent treatment. Participants will learn best practices for medication selection, initiation, titration, monitoring, and patient engagement, improving their ability to deliver effective, timely MAT and support long-term recovery outcomes for individuals with OUD and AUD.
Educational Goal
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
-
Identify FDA-approved medication options for treating Alcohol Use Disorder and Opioid Use Disorder, including methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone.
-
Explain the mechanisms of action, benefits, and limitations of full agonists, partial agonists, and antagonists used in MAT.
-
Differentiate between oral, sublingual, and injectable MAT formulations and the clinical considerations for their administration and monitoring.
-
Apply evidence-based treatment decision approaches by matching MAT options to patient factors such as diagnosis, stability, access, and treatment goals.
