Educational Goal

The educational goal of this session is to prepare attendees to differentiate between nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB), identify factors that suggest elevated risk and need to assess for NSSI and STB among people with eating disorders, and apply interventions for reducing suicide risk for people with eating disorders.

Description

Up to one-third of individuals with an eating disorder experience suicidal thoughts or attempts during their lifetime, making suicide risk assessment a vital competency for eating disorder clinicians. This continuing education course provides the actionable knowledge and clinical tools needed to strengthen patient safety, foster positive coping, and instill hope. Throughout this session, participants will learn to differentiate non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) from suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB), identify key risk factors signaling an urgent need for clinical assessment, and learn three targeted interventions designed to reduce suicide risk in eating disorder populations.

Presenters

Kathryn Hope Gordon, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Director of Clinical Training at Equip. She completed her B.S. (Psychology), M.S., and Ph.D. (Clinical Psychology) at Florida State University. In addition, Dr. Gordon completed a one year predoctoral clinical internship at University of Chicago Medical Center. For the first 10 years of her career, she was a professor at North Dakota State University (NDSU) who taught mental health-related classes and published research focused on suicide prevention and disordered eating. After working at NDSU, Dr. Gordon then provided therapy services at Sanford Women’s Health Clinic in Fargo, ND. Dr. Gordon is the author of The Suicidal Thoughts Workbook: CBT Skills to Reduce Emotional Pain, Increase Hope, and Prevent Suicide and The Suicidal Thoughts Guided Journal: CBT Practices to Soothe Emotional Pain, Build Coping Skills, and Find Hope. Dr. Gordon's current role at Equip focuses on training providers in evidence-based treatments for eating disorders.
