Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the impact of anti-LGBTQAI+ legislation on LGBTQAI+ youth.

  • Identify 3 key components of LGBTQAI+ affirming therapy to apply to their current practice.

  • Discuss 2 strategies for advocacy at the local, state, or national level.

Educational Goal

Participants will improve their clinical skills in working affirmatively with LGBTQAI+ youth who are impacted by anti-LGBTQAI+ legislation in their state as well as increase their knowledge of advocacy efforts.

Description

Anti-LGBTQAI+ legislation has been on the rise for the past several years. LGBTQAI+ youth in all states, especially those with restrictive laws, report negative impacts on their mental health related to the current political climate. The goal of this workshop is to support mental health professionals in affirming LGBTQAI+ youth, especially those living in states with oppressive laws.

Amber Bloom, PhD, LPC-S (she/her)
Dr. Amber Bloom (she/her) is a core faculty member at Antioch University in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling department,licensed mental health counselor, and supervisor. Dr. Bloom has a broad range of clinical experience with clients of all ages in various settings including schools, community mental health, and private practice. Her clinical and research interests include: neurodiversity, LGBTQ2SAI+ people, religious trauma, and parenting.
